Mass Dance Performance at Lingnan

What started out as a very ordinary and potentially boring day turned out to be quite fun. My first class of the day was canceled so I got to lounge around this morning. At 1:30, I went to my Hong Kong Popular Culture class and we got our midterms back... I got 100%!! I don't really think he graded hard and I have no idea what he graded us on (especially for the essay) since he didn't write any comments. Quite understandable considering we have like 60 people in our class. Anyway, I was quite surprised because I was pretty sure what I wrote for the essay made no sense, especially since we had to analyze lyrics from a Cantonese pop song.

After that class, I went to my Understanding Drawing lecture. My professor and my TA took turns standing barefoot on a table doing different poses while we practiced quick figure drawings. Apparently we were supposed to improve after doing ten or so of them, but I feel like mine got progressively worse or stayed the same.

Luckily the class ended right after I finished my last page in my sketchbook. I headed back to my room and finished reading a great book. After dinner I headed to the "Joint University Mass Dance" performance. Basically it was a dance performance of all the dance groups from all the universities in Hong Kong (there are 9 of them). They are performing at each school different nights this week and tonight they performed at Lingnan. They danced in the giant open plaza in the middle of campus. It felt like the whole school came out to watch, so it was hard to find a good spot to stand. After a while I managed to squeeze into a place where I had a great view.

Just a portion of the crowd
The performance was SO good. The choreography, costumes, facial expression, creativity, and dancing. I took lots of videos and I will post two of them on here (not the best quality, sorry). Every dance was really strong and well rehearsed. The dancers were all realllllly talented. There was a pretty equal number of girls and boys dancing, which was really nice to see compared to WAC where it is basically all girls who dance. I don't think I could rave enough about all the dances and how well done everything was. The performance made me really miss dancing. There's no place for me to dance here. No open space and I couldn't join the dance club because I can't speak Cantonese. I was so energized after watching the performance that once I got off the elevator on my floor, I danced my way to my room. I can't WAIT to start dancing again next semester.

*My dorm internet is being particularly slow today so I will upload the videos at a later time :-)
