My family left on Monday morning after we had a delicious breakfast together. It was really hard to watch them leave without me. I feel even more lonely now that they are gone. But I am SO glad they came. We had a wonderful time and I am very fortunate that they were able to make such a long journey. I am also glad they got to see the world I have been living in for close to three months. They can finally understand what I mean when I refer to certain things.
My grandmother made a list of impressions she had so I thought I'd share some of them on here.
1) Hong Kong is a very clean city with very clean subway stations
2) It is very crowded with really high noise levels in shopping and food places.
3) Handrails, elevator button panels, etc. are disinfected regularly.
4) There are public hand sanitizer dispensers.
5) Many people of all ages wear face masks.
6) She only saw one drunk and four beggars.
7) People of various ages offered her a seat on the subway
8) The children are adorable
9) And so are their school uniforms (every child seems to be wearing one)
10) During construction, bamboo staging is used and the buildings are wrapped in what looks like green netting.
11) Hong Kong has an excellent mass transit system
12) Octopus cards are a genius invention because not only can you use it for mass transit but also in grocery stores, convenient stores, printing stores, doing laundry, etc.
13) In Hong Kong, age 1 is 12 months after birth while in Mainland China, age 1 is at birth.
14) The one child policy doesn't apply to Hong Kong
15) Hardly anyone seems to be overweight.
16) At cheaper restaurants, it is customary to wash all your dishes in tea.
17) In Cheng Chau, we were given damp hand towels to wipe our hands before we ate.
18) Lots of people made eye contact with her and smiled
19) There is no tipping.
20) Buses pull up really close to the back of other buses leaving less than one foot of space (Mom's observation)
I really miss them and now I feel a bit more homesick. But I'm coming home sooner than expected so I need to take full advantage of my time here and stop being lazy. Plus Megan is coming in two weeks so I have something else to look forward to!!
