Finally I am feeling almost healthy again. Yesterday I was feeling only a little bit better but I managed to get up and go to the grocery store at Fu Tai (about a 10 minute walk away). I think people here have a totally different concept of personal space. Women behind me at the grocery store had no qualms about pushing their carts into the back of my legs if I was moving to slow. When I was checking out, a woman started piling her stuff on the counter before I had even finished. It was a little bit irritating, but I guess it's just another cultural characteristic that I have to adjust to. It was my first time going out completely by myself yesterday. It was a bit unnerving being a western woman walking alone on the streets. I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable enough to walk alone at night. It's not the best feeling knowing that you are taller than so many other women and that people are definitely looking at you. I try to ignore it, but it does make me feel rather self conscious.
When I was leaving Fu Tai, I saw a turtle (or a tortoise) walking on the concrete. There was a crowd of curious children following it. I am not sure if it actually belonged to someone or if it wandered there from the woods nearby.
I came back to my room, exhausted, and collapsed for the afternoon. When Trace, my roommate, came back, we went to Yuen Long for dinner (it's about 2-3 MTR stops away). We ate at a quaint Italian restaurant. The food was delicious. Oh how I love Italian food :-)
After dinner, we walked around. We stopped at a $10 dollar store (like a dollar store at home) and I purchased some school supplies. After that we just wandered around and then took the lightrail home. It was a fun day - a good way to ease back into being a real person again.
Today Trace, Sophie, and I are going shopping. I will update on those adventures later!
